Creeksville AME Zion Church History

1877 – 2021

Origins & Early Growth (1877–1963)

Creeksville AME Zion Church began as a Sunday School class in 1877 and was formally organized as Daniel Chapel in 1879. Services were first held in a log cabin under Rev. C.K. Smith until 1924. Between 1925 to 1963, dedicated pastors, including W.E. Turner, J.C. Palmer, and others, helped construct a "board" church and grow the congregation.

Church Name & Circuit Changes:

In 1910, the name changed to Creeksville AME Zion Church. For many years, it was linked to the circuit with Bethel and later Mt. Hebrew AME Zion Churches. By 1960, Creeksville became a fully independent church with weekly services.

New Sanctuary & Expansion (1964–1989)

Under Rev. Grant Price (1964-1966), a concrete block sanctuary was built in 1964. Subsequent leaders, including Rev. W.R. Johnson (1966-1970) and Rev. J.C. Davis (1970-1988), expanded the structure and added a kitchen, fellowship hall, van, and classrooms. Rev. Ander Wright (1989-1996) later oversaw the paving of the parking lot and improvements for accessibility.

1993 Fire & Rebuilding:

A lightning strike on July 25, 1993, caused a fire that destroyed much of the church. Services were temporarily relocated, and with strong leadership and community support, the new sanctuary was completed by Christmas Day, 1994.

Modern Leadership & Growth (1996–2022)

  • Rev. Robert E. McCall (1996-2008): Led financial growth and hosted a mortgage- burning ceremony.
  • Rev. Ray P. Owens (2008-2009): Developed the church’s mission/vision and introduced the Acolyte Ministry.
  • Rev. Delilah Washington-Gaddy (2010-2018): First woman pastor; led major renovations, outreach programs, and community partnerships.
  • Rev. Toddy Brooks (2018-2023): Energized the church with successful fundraising, technological adaptation during COVID-19, and financial independence.

Current Leadership:

Rev. Dr. Jonette L. Camp (2023-Current): Under Rev. Dr. Camp’s leadership, Creeksville remains committed to ministry, service, and spreading the Gospel. We have welcomed 17 new members and celebrated 10 salvations, with continued support from our church and community. We continue to retrofit the church building and modernize operations. These efforts reflect our unity and growth—to God be the glory!

Legacy:

For over 147 years, Creeksville AME Zion Church has been a pillar of faith, service, resilience, and love—a community bound by its commitment to God and one another.
